My name is Isa (@isalina__) I’ve been dancing for 9 years and dancing Twerk for 6. In my classes, I combine technical guidance with empowerment, helping students build confidence, express themselves, and connect with their body, always making sure to give a little background on the dance and music. My sessions are fun, and besides proper technique focused on both performance and self-expression. I want to share what Twerk has given me and raise awareness for Twerk as a dance style. A little background on Twerk: Twerk traces its roots to West African dances like Mapouka, brought to the Americas and the Caribbean through the African diaspora. It evolved in the US, especially in hip-hop and bounce, and shares similar hip movements with styles across the Americas and the Caribbean and in African countries. Today, Twerk is a global dance, with the US and Latin American countries leading freestyle Twerk connected to African and indigenous roots. It also serves as a statement against sexism, colonialism, and racism, promoting empowerment, body positivity, and a growing international community.
